The National Library

The Carnegie Library which preceded the Seychelles National Library was opened in 1910. It was built from a grant provided by the Carnegie Trust Fund and was managed by a Board of Trustees.

Over the years, the National Library expanded into more specialised services such as the Children’s Section, the Adult Reference Section with a special collection on Indian Ocean among others. Following this expansion, there was a need for more space to accomodate the increasing stocks as well as the number of readers.

The National Development Plan of 1985 – 1989 therefore initiated plans for the construction of a new library. In order to implement the project, the government instituted the National Library Trust Fund.

General Collections of Books

The collection comprises fiction and non-fiction books covering the various fields of knowledge. These materials are located in the Adult and Children’s Lending sections of the main library and lending areas in the Public branch libraries and Reading centres.  The books can be borrowed by registered members.

Library Donations

Donate to Us

Most public libraries accept gift books with the proviso that the library is free to decide whether to keep the book in the library’s collection, put it in a book sale to raise funds for the library, or discard it. Persons seeking to donate books to libraries are encouraged to call their local library and ask about donating books to it.
